If you live outside the US long enough to qualify for the FEIE (330+ days/year), I would suggest domiciling in South Dakota and eliminating the need to file state taxes. Residency requirements are minimal, you need to spend one night in the state every five years and you can legally use mail forwarding addresses on your driver's license. I spend about $250/year for that. No house or apartment and no need to use a relative/friend's address. If you have a car you can also register it in SD for ~$65 a year.
